What we do
Musically gifted young people come from families of all levels of financial resource: many need help. We are constantly fundraising to ensure that we can help as many young people as possible. We are very grateful for the support we have received, whether large donations from charitable trusts or small legacies from music lovers; every one makes a difference to young musicians and their families.
Since 1998 we have awarded over £400,000 to more than 750 young people and every year we are inundated with letters and emails of thanks:
'Thank you so much for giving me the money for the awards. My new violin is better than I imagined. It has an amazing tone. I’ll treasure it forever and play it with pride.'
'This is going to help out more than I can tell you!
Following a path of music education, especially of a level which adequately
supports especially talented young musicians of an advanced level is very expensive,
and is quite difficult on a low income, but thanks to the very kind generosity of AYM
T will be able to continue on his studies …'
'This award is truly invaluable to help
support the gifted young musicians which you help, and who otherwise might have to
discontinue their studies and tragically waste their potential …'
'We are so truly grateful
for this very kind and generous help, and want to assure you that this support will be met
with continued commitment and dedication to study!'
'We were absolutely delighted by the news you brought; as she progresses the cost of her musical expenses (lessons, travel, instrument purchase etc) mounted up and we found it extremely difficult to keep up. In the meantime she has been working very hard this year and her progress is unthinkable from just a year ago.'
Many of the young musicians we have supported have achieved considerable success: they have won or made the shortlist of the BBC Young Musician of the Year, developed brilliant careers as soloists, or won Guardian Composer of the Year. Equally important are the many young people who have gone on to build successful careers as professional musicians in orchestras and ensembles, or who work as music teachers in schools or as community musicians, helping people from across communities engage with and enjoy making music..
Our partners
AYM works in close collaboration with a diversity of partners across music education. For example we are a signatory to the Music Manifesto and have strong links with many local authority music services, all the specialist music schools and centres for advanced training, young people’s orchestras, music courses and gifted and talented networks, plus many colleagues within contemporary music, jazz and community and youth music. Our Business Plan for 2008 to 2010 will involve a number of sustained initiatives with our partners, ensuring that our work in supporting young musicians has the greatest possible impact.
