What we do

Financial help
Developing a young person’s musical ability requires considerable investment: hours dedicated to practice, travel to be taught by the best available teachers, specialised courses to expand musical horizons and build on skills, and the purchase or loan of high quality instruments. All these cost a great deal of money. In families where income is limited, it is often impossible to find the funds to support these expenses. This is where AYM aims to help. By fundraising from a wide range of sources, we run an annual Awards programme, whereby £50,000 is distributed to the most talented young musicians in the greatest financial need.

Advice and guidance
As young musicians develop, questions will often arise concerning, for example, other sources of funding, information on the most appropriate teachers, on courses or on how to go about buying a new instrument. It’s often difficult to find the best organisation to contact for any particular question and, just as importantly, the best person within that organisation to handle the question. Our Pathways programme provides a straightforward point of access for musically talented young people who need guidance on how to develop their talent, by helping put them in touch with the rich musical resources available to them from music organisations across the country.
We receive hundreds of enquiries each year from talented young musicians, their teachers and families. Building on our experience over the last decade, our recently launched Pathways programme aims to help at every point of the 'pyramid of progression' from classroom music provision to national level opportunities. As part of the launch we'd like to let you know that a fantastic publication entitled Finding Your Way in Music is now available to download from this website. Originally produced by Birmingham Conservatoire, AYM has produced an updated version of this accessible and friendly guide in partnership with them. It's really clear and concise so do take a look. Our partners

AYM works in close collaboration with a diversity of partners across music education. For example we are a signatory to the Music Manifesto and have strong links with many local authority music services, all the specialist music schools and centres for advanced training, young people’s orchestras, music courses and gifted and talented networks, plus many colleagues within contemporary music, jazz and community and youth music. Our Business Plan for 2008 to 2010 involves a number of sustained initiatives with our partners, ensuring that our work in supporting young musicians has the greatest possible impact.
